In his final Sprint Cup season Jeff Gordon won Sunday's race at Martinsville Speedway for his first victory of the year and the 93rd of this career.  Gordon led only 35 of 500 laps to win the race, but more importantly it guarantees him a spot among the final four drivers for the Sprint Cup championship at Homestead Speedway in three weeks.

Jamie McMurray came in second followed by Denny Hamlin, Dale Earnhardt, Jr. and Kyle Busch.

It was a rough day for some of the other Chase drivers including Brad Keselowski who collided with Matt Kenseth with 50 laps left sending Kenseth spinning into Kurt Busch.  Keselowski and Busch needed to go for repairs.

Then a short time later Kenseth clipped Joey Logano from behind sending both cars into the wall. Was it a continuation of their feud over the past couple of weeks?  Kenseth denied it, but NASCAR wasn't so sure.  They parked Kenseth's car for the rest of the race, then later called Kenseth, his crew chief and owner Joe Gibbs to talk about it.

Logano had led 207 laps but because of the wreck he finished 37th.  Kenseth came in 38th.

So after the first race of the Eliminator round, here are the current Chase standings:

  • Jeff Gordon
  • Kyle Busch
  • Martin Truex, Jr.
  • Kevin Harvick
  • Carl Edwards
  • Brad Keselowski
  • Kurt Busch
  • Joey Logano

Only three races left.  Next up on the schedule is Texas Motor Speedway on Sunday.
