Tree stand laws in New York State are getting plenty of attention these days as hunters try to navigate what is legal and safe.

Many deer hunters across New York State know that once the snow melts and the fields start turning green, another outdoor season begins: shed hunting. Across state forests and rural areas, antlers are starting to appear as whitetail deer drop their racks.

But for many hunters, this time of year is also a reminder to remove tree stands and other equipment that may have been left behind after the season.

Shed Hunting Season Is Underway in New York

If you love to deer hunt in New York State, the 2025–2026 season was pretty decent for many hunters. Several impressive whitetails were taken across the state before the harsh winter weather and heavy snow arrived.

Once the tough winter conditions set in, hunting became much more challenging. Still, many hunters are already looking ahead to the next season that begins this fall.

Reminder About Hunting Structures on Public Land

If you hunt on public land or in New York State forests, there are a few important reminders about what types of hunting structures are allowed.

"No permanent structures should be established, including tree stands or blinds".

While the law is not aimed solely at hunting, New York State does have regulations regarding permanent structures on public property. Hunters should always check the latest rules before leaving stands, blinds, or other equipment in the woods.

After taking a walk through the property where I had been hunting, I noticed that my portable pop-up deer blind had been destroyed by the heavy snow this winter. It was a mistake on my part for not removing it sooner, and it turned into an expensive lesson.

Because of that experience, I’ve adjusted my plans for next season and will likely be installing something more solid and permanent on private property where I hunt.

Spring Hunting Seasons Are Right Around the Corner

While the weather across New York State has been a bit of a roller coaster lately, spring isn’t far away. That also means turkey hunting season is just around the corner.

Many of these hunting blinds can also work well for turkey hunting, especially when bringing kids along into the woods.

Over the years, my perspective on hunting has changed. For a long time, I focused on trying to be perfect, studying deer patterns and always trying to be in the exact right spot at the exact right time.

Now, the right spot is simply being outdoors with my kids, watching them experience hunting for the first time and teaching them the importance of conservation. That, in many ways, is the best trophy of all.

Conservation Is the Goal in New York

New York State remains one of the best places in the country for hunting and fishing. While some of the laws may feel strict at times, the bottom line is protecting wildlife and preserving the outdoors for future generations.
