This is a historic summer in New York State. As America celebrates its 250th birthday, communities across the state are marking the occasion with parades, festivals, fireworks, and special events. But there’s another topic making the rounds online this summer, and it’s getting plenty of people talking.

Could we really experience a brief moment of zero gravity here on Earth?

I know it’s cliché to say, but it sure feels like summers fly by faster every year. As we get older, time seems to speed up. Between kids’ sporting events, family parties, vacations, concerts, and work commitments, the weeks seem to disappear before we know it. Blink, and summer is over.

The Viral Zero Gravity Rumor

One rumor circulating online claims that August 12 will bring a brief period of zero gravity because of the alignment of planets. According to the posts, people would supposedly feel lighter or even experience weightlessness for a few moments.

It certainly sounds fascinating, but there’s one problem.

Scientists have repeatedly debunked this claim. Despite the rumor resurfacing almost every year, there is no astronomical event that will cause people on Earth to experience zero gravity. Earth’s gravity remains essentially unchanged, and planetary alignments simply don’t have that kind of effect.

Wouldn’t It Be Amazing?

Even though the rumor isn’t true, it’s still fun to imagine what zero gravity would actually feel like.

Watching astronauts float aboard spacecraft or seeing them move effortlessly during space missions makes you wonder what that experience would be like. For most of us, that’s about as close as we’ll ever get to experiencing weightlessness.

Plenty of Summer Fun Still Ahead

While August 12 won’t bring a moment of zero gravity, there’s still plenty to enjoy across New York State this summer.

County fairs, festivals, amusement parks, concerts, and family vacations are filling calendars throughout the state. And if you’re really hoping for a feeling that’s close to weightlessness, head to your favorite carnival or amusement park. A ride on a roller coaster or one of those spinning attractions might be the closest thing you’ll experience to zero gravity this summer.

Whether you’re celebrating America’s 250th birthday, spending time with family, or checking out one of the many summer events happening across New York State, make sure to enjoy every moment. Summer has a way of disappearing before we know it.
