Jessica Pegula Gave A Special Message To Damar Hamlin [WATCH]
Before her first-round win in the Australian Open on Sunday, Buffalo tennis star Jessica Pegula gave Damar Hamlin a special shout-out.
The Pegulas are considered by many to be the “first family” of Western New York. Kim and Terry Pegula are the well-known, wealthy owners of the Buffalo Bills and the Buffalo Sabres, along with several other western New York sports franchises.
Their daughter, Jessica, has become a well-known name outside of her parents’ shadow in the world of professional tennis, winning three women’s singles titles and nearly $7 million in prize money throughout her career.
On Sunday night (or Monday morning if you were watching live down under), Pegula, who is ranked third in the world, scored a 6-0, 6-1 victory against Romania’s Jaqueline Cristian in the first round of the Australian Open.
Before the match (her first of the Grand Slam series), to the delight of Western New Yorkers watching, Pegula, using a blue wipe-off marker, wrote “Go Bills #3” on the camera lens, followed by a heart - a tribute to Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin.
Thankfully, Hamlin, who collapsed earlier this year after suffering cardiac arrest during a game against the Cincinnati Bengals, is making a remarkable recovery since the incident - but that doesn’t make Pegula’s declaration of support for him and her parents’ team any less moving.
We love to see athletes from around the world showing their love for Hamlin, especially one with such a famous Western New York name.
