Did You See These Helicopters Over Buffalo, New York? [VIDEO]

If you were in parts of Western New York on March 12, you may have noticed low-flying, loud helicopters circling overhead.

Residents in portions of Erie County, especially south of Buffalo, reported hearing helicopters zooming across the sky. Social media tends to light up when something like this happens, and several people were asking the same question: What were those helicopters doing over Western New York?

We were able to catch a glimpse of them while they were circling over Hamburg, New York.

Helicopters Are Not Uncommon in Western New York

Helicopters do occasionally fly over Western New York. In many cases, they are medical mercy flight helicopters responding to emergencies or transporting patients between hospitals.

At other times, you may see aircraft operated by the Erie County Sheriff’s Office or the New York State Police flying overhead as part of routine patrols or search operations.

But these helicopters appeared to be something different.

Military Helicopters May Have Been Conducting Training

The helicopters seen flying over Erie County this week appeared to be military aircraft.

While it’s impossible to confirm exactly what type they were, some speculation on neighborhood apps and social media suggested they may have been U.S. Marine helicopters.

Military aircraft occasionally conduct training exercises over the region, and Western New York’s proximity to Lake Erie and several military installations makes it a possible route for these types of flights.

Air Show Cancellation Makes Sightings Even Rarer

This year, sightings like this might feel even more unusual.

The Thunder Over Niagara Airshow, which was scheduled for June 2026, had to be canceled. Reports indicate the cancellation is related to the current military situation involving Iran and the Middle East.

Because of that, residents may see fewer military aircraft demonstrations in the region this summer.

A Rare — And Powerful — Sight Over Western New York

Seeing military helicopters flying low over the area can be both exciting and a little intimidating. The sheer power and noise they produce is something you don’t experience every day.

For many who saw them pass overhead, it was a rare sight in the skies over Western New York.
