Without the Bills or Sabres, Buffalo would just not be the same. This city absolutely loves rooting on their teams and now there’s another professional sports rooting interest.

Buffalo native Jessica Pegula upset fifth-seed Elina Svitolina, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 to advance to the quarterfinals in the 2021 Australian Open. It’s the furthest Pegula has advanced in a Grand Slam tournament.

Jessica is the oldest daughter of Bills and Sabres owners Terry and Kim Pegula and was born in Buffalo, NY in 1994.

Pegula was interviewed after the win and talked about Buffalo and her city rooting her on.

“I’m sure everyone’s excited,” Pegula said. “Buffalo is kind of a small town but everyone gets behind whoever so being from there I’ve definitely gotten a lot of support from them so shout out to Buffalo for always supporting me back home and hopefully I can bring some tennis back to Buffalo.”

Pegula will face fellow American Jennifer Brady (22nd-seed) on Wednesday morning at 12 am. The winner moves on to the semifinal and from there it’s just two wins to be crowned the 2021 Australian Open champion.

Tennis is one of my favorite sports to play and it’s so cool that a Buffalo native is just three wins away from winning a Grand Slam tennis tournament. Let’s go Jessica Pegula! Making Buffalo proud!
