People With A New York Accent Make More Money?
The summer has unofficially started here in New York State and the fun and good weather are finally here! Perhaps you have a son or daughter who have recently graduated college or are about to finish with high school and move on to a career? Beyond the diplomas and reference lists that they will need for success, there is another tool that may help them with their compensation agreement.
The hard work has been done and the exams have been finished. Now what? Hopefully you have done your homework and gotten a resume together and have sought out the right job for your skills. The next thing you need to do is brush up on your New York/ New England accent.
There are reports that indicate that those sound like they are from the Northeast have a better chance to make more money. Those with a southern accent may struggle to make as much as their northern competitors.
Fox News reported that:
According to the study by the University of Chicago and the University of Munich, people with a Southern accent could lose out on thousands of dollars per year. The research revealed that people with strong regional accents face a wage penalty of up to 20% compared to those who speak with a "standard accent."
There are some great jobs available for teens this summer as well. Those who love to swim can get a good job as a lifeguard at just about any pool or beach in New York State. If you or someone you know is interested, it may be a good idea to start your lifeguard certification training.
