First Snowfall Coming to These New York State Areas
The first snowflakes of the season are about to fly in portions of New York State. In the Adirondack region, there have already been reports of snowfall at higher elevations. However, with colder air moving in, lower-elevation areas of the state could soon see their first flurries of the season.
Are you ready for winter? It was just a few years ago that a massive lake-effect snowstorm moved across portions of Western New York. This time of year marks the anniversary of the infamous October surprise snowstorm, an event many residents will never forget.

I’ll never forget trying to drive to work while avoiding downed power lines and trees that had snapped under the weight of the heavy, wet snow. With leaves still on the trees, the additional weight proved too much for many branches and trunks to handle.
Coldest Air of the Season Could Bring First Snowflakes to Western New York
Fast-forward to this year, and it doesn’t look like significant snowfall is on the way just yet. However, the forecast calls for the coldest air of the season so far to move into the region by the weekend. That could create the right conditions for a few flurries at higher elevations south of Buffalo and along the Tug Hill Plateau.
While widespread accumulating snow is not expected based on this outlook, even a few snowflakes can serve as a reminder that winter is approaching in New York State.
Drivers Should Prepare for Potentially Icy Roads
This is a good time of year to brush up on your winter driving skills. Although significant snowfall isn’t expected just yet, icy patches could still develop on roadways as temperatures drop.
With leaves already falling and the possibility of icy conditions, early-morning commuters should use extra caution, especially if they’re traveling during the colder hours of the weekend.
Remember to leave extra space between vehicles, slow down when conditions warrant it, and allow additional time to reach your destination.
What Should You Keep in Your Vehicle Before Winter?
Now is also the time to start thinking about your winter vehicle emergency kit. Having the right supplies on hand can make a big difference if you become stranded along the road during a snowstorm.
We’re often reminded to keep our gas tanks at least half full during the winter months. It’s also a good idea to keep blankets, extra food, water, and other supplies in your vehicle to help you stay warm and comfortable if you get stuck.
I also like to keep a shovel in my vehicle, just in case I need to dig out of a snowbank. Other useful items include a flashlight, a phone charger or power bank, an ice scraper, and a small first-aid kit.
A little preparation now can go a long way when winter weather arrives in New York State.
