The New York State law goes into effect this week and people are going to get internet for only $20, and in some cases even $15 per month.

Starting tomorrow a law is going to force anyone who offers internet, like Spectrum or Verizon, to offer an option for $15 and $20, for low income families. For example, this is what people will get for that price starting this week:

  • $15 per month - 25 megabits per second
  • $20 per month - 200 megabits per second

The internet companies are not happy and think that Congress needs to get involved in order to cover some of the cost for some of these low-income options for Wi-Fi. The problem is, at least for consumers, that you don't have more than 1 option for internet in some areas.

You can sign up here to get the option and learn more about your options.

The new law requires ISPs in the state to offer these rates despite resistance from a coalition of broadband companies who asked the US Supreme Court to block the mandate. The Supreme Court declined to hear that case in mid-December. Consequently, in mid-January, AT&T announced plans to remove access to its AT&T Internet Air service in New York", according to CNET.com.

What is the average price for internet in New York State?

The average house in the United States of America is paying around $63 per house for internet. According to the USA today, take a look at some of the average prices that people are apparently paying for internet:

Spectrum Internet®$50–$70/mo.500–1,000 Mbps
Starry$40–$85/mo.**200–1,000 Mbps
Optimum$40–$180/mo.300–5,000 Mbps

These numbers seem kind of fishy. When was the last time that you heard anyone having internet prices from Spectrum for this amount?
