If you grew up playing Nintendo video games, you might be sitting on a gold mine in your house! Families across New York State have been cleaning out their homes and getting ready for fall, and some may discover that they have a jackpot of old video games sitting in a basement, closet or storage bin.

I remember growing up in the 1990s and hoping that Santa Claus would bring us a Nintendo game system. Our friends all had them, and it was so much fun to go to their houses after school and play games like Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!! and Duck Hunt.

As parents, I know we worry about our kids and screen time, and that is a valid concern. However, I remember spending a couple of hours playing Nintendo after school, and somehow we turned out OK!

That being said, it is a much different world today than it was when we were kids in the 1990s. Back then, we were simply playing Nintendo. There was no social media, online gaming culture or endless stream of content competing for our attention.

Some Old Nintendo Games Could Be Worth Thousands

I was going through a couple of items around the house recently and noticed some old Nintendo games we had laying around. Although the games I have are worth next to nothing financially, they are worth plenty when it comes to the great memories of my childhood.

According to research into the collectible video game market, however, there are some extremely rare Nintendo games that can be worth an incredible amount of money.

J2Games reports that a rare version of Nintendo World Championships can be worth anywhere from $100,000 to $200,000, depending on the specific version and condition. Only a very small number of these cartridges were produced, making them highly sought after by collectors.

And that isn’t the only old Nintendo game that can be valuable. Some vintage video games and consoles can fetch well over $10,000 when they are rare, authentic and in excellent condition.

Check Your Old Nintendo Games Before You Toss Them

It might be worth your time to go through your old video game stash, especially if you have games and systems that have been sitting untouched for decades.

Don’t assume that every old Nintendo cartridge is valuable. Condition, rarity, packaging and the exact version of a game can make a huge difference in its collectible value.

If you find something that looks particularly rare, you may want to have it properly evaluated before selling it. A little research could tell you whether you have a childhood keepsake or something that collectors would actually pay serious money for.

Fall Could Be a Great Time to Go Hunting for Vintage Games

The graphics on video games today are obviously far beyond what we had back in the 1990s. But those old games bring back some pretty incredible memories.

Now, many of us are cleaning out our parents’ basements, going through boxes in our own homes and finding little pieces of our childhood. Maybe you’ll hand those games down to your kids, or perhaps you’ll discover that something you almost threw away is actually worth some money.

Fall is also a great time to check out local yard sales, estate sales and garage sales. You never know what might be sitting in a box waiting to be discovered.

So before you get rid of those old Nintendo games, take a closer look. You might just have a piece of video game history sitting in your house.
