How Western New Yorkers Order a Pepperoni Pizza

Pizza.  It may just be the ultimate comfort food.  It first arrived on America's shores in the early 20th century along with waves of Italian immigrants.  As most of the immigrants that arrived settled in the Northeast, our part of the country was one of the first to experience the culinary masterpiece.

Pizza has evolved so much from its early days.  You now can get pretty much anything that you can think of on your pizza.  You can order the Cheeseburger Pizza at Krave It Sandwich Shop & Eatery in New York City. There are slices bigger than your head at Hoeks' Death Metal Pizza in Austin, Texas.

You can try the lobster-topped pizza at Scampo in Boston, or even a Chili Cheese Frito pizza at Ian's Pizza in Milwaukee.

But at the heart of the matter, we need to get back to basics.  The basics of ordering a pizza. It seems like a silly question, but it is one that turns out to be a matter of great debate.  Here in Western New York, when you pick up the phone to order a large pizza with pepperoni, what exactly do you say?

One would think that the crust and sauce are a foregone conclusion when ordering the pie.  No one is picking up the phone and saying.. "I'll take a large pizza, with crust, sauce, and pepperoni.." But, what about the cheese?  Is that a foregone conclusion as well?

Personally, when I call in to order mine, I keep it plain and simple.  I say, "Give me a large pepperoni, please.".

But, here in Western New York, opinion seems to be split.  We conducted a not-so-scientific Facebook poll, and here is what we found Western New Yorkers say:

- Large Cheese & Pepperoni - 45%

- Large Cheese & Pep - 35%

- Large Pepperoni - 20%

We told you it was a matter of great debate.  No, the question is, which pie team are you on?
