According to People, legendary television host Regis Philbin has passed away at the age of 88.

"His family and friends are forever grateful for the time we got to spend with him – for his warmth, his legendary sense of humor, and his singular ability to make every day into something worth talking about. We thank his fans and admirers for their incredible support over his 60-year career and ask for privacy as we mourn his loss," the Philbin family says.

Philbin's career took off in 1988 as the host of Live! with Regis and Kathie Lee with Kathie Lee Gifford. In 2001, the show became Live! with Regis and Kelly (with Kelly Rippa).

A new generation of television viewers best remember Regis as the host of the hugely popular Who Wants To Be a Millionaire? gameshow, which Regis hosted from 1999-2002.

Philbin has hosted other popular network shows over his illustrious career.

Even before his hosting during the '90s and 2000s, Philbin was well known in media for his work in the '70s and '80s.

Regis Philbin was a rare television host that spanned multiple generations. When I was a kid, my friends and I knew him as the guy who hosted Who Wants To Be a Millionaire? It wasn't until I got older I recognized how long his career had lasted and how influential he was for people getting into television and media.

Regis will be missed.
