The big news on Thursday in the NFL were the reports from the likes of Adam Schefter of ESPN and Tom Pelissaro that longtime quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick is retiring after 17 seasons.

The news first broke on Twitter after former Buffalo Bills running back Fred Jackson tweeted out a text from Fitz that basically said his career was over.

It should be noted that Fitz has not officially announced his retirement himself on social media.

Fitzpatrick began his career with the St. Louis Rams in 2005 and suited up for eight teams. His legend started, however, as a member of the Bills.

Fitz played for the Bills from 2009-2012 and became one of the most beloved Bills of all-time. That’s no exaggeration — Ryan Fitzpatrick is truly beloved by Bills fans and Buffalo.

Fitzpatrick last played with the Washington Commanders in 2021 but hurt his hip in week 1, which ended his season.

But did Fitz actually quietly end his career with the Bills?

It was pointed out this morning that on ESPN’s official website page, the Bills list transactions with Ryan Fitzpatrick retiring last week. They’re the only team who lists Fitz’s retirement on their transaction page.

This is not confirmed, obviously, so we have to wait and see. It’s very common for NFL players to sign one-day contracts to retire as a member of a team they spent the most time with. Frank Gore just did this with the San Francisco 49ers.

Fitz has even said it before — Buffalo was Gus favorite place to play. He spent four years here and it was the NFL stop he became a starting quarterback and signed a huge contract.

Hopefully, this is true.
