Should NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell Be Fired? [POLL]
The Ray Rice controversy is the hot button issue of the moment, not just in the sports world, but in the American consciousness.
Despite indefinitely suspending the now former Baltimore Ravens running back, the NFL has taken plenty of heat for initially only handing him a two-game suspension. Now, there are questions whether the league previously saw the video of Rice striking his then-fiancee, Janay Palmer (who recently came to his defense), in an Atlantic City elevator.
The league's handling of the matter has many up in arms, including Keith Olbermann, who teed off on the subject on Monday night:
This is merely the latest scandal to rock the NFL under Goodell's watch. There have been questions about the league's policy toward drug abuse, which has been characterized as more lenient than its stance on domestic abuse. There was Bountygate, Michael Vick, Plaxico Burress, the Miami Dolphins bullying fiasco and Ben Roethlisberger's sexual assault woes. And, of course, there's the ongoing matter of head injuries, amplified by the suicides of retired players.
The NFL is a cash cow, generating millions, if not billions of dollars. Has the league spiraled out of control, though? Has Goodell lost the handle? Does the league need to prove to fans that it cares more about people?
