This place is located in Cattaraugus County, has 30 residents, and is named after the iconic house located within the town.
The smallest town in New York State is Red House, New York.
First settled in 1827, Red House became a town in 1869 after it was formed from part of the town of Salamanca. It was named after a prominent red house that was within the town limits.
While there are only 30 residents living in the town at the last census, the town was bustling in the 1800's. The largest number of people who called Red House, New York, home was 1,156, which happened back in 1890.
So why is Red House, the smallest town in New York State? Most of the township was turned over to the state when Allegheny State Park was created in 1967.
The state began an eminent domain campaign to buy out the remainder of the town; at the time, to create the Southern Tier Expressway, which is now Interstate 86, and moved right through the middle of Red House. The state took over and destroyed many of the homes that were in Red House.
Red House, New York, is 55.9 square miles big, with a majority of the area being land, with just .19 square miles being water.
