Youth...Yes, Youth! The Buffalo Bills have their star quarterback Josh Allen signed for the next several years and they need to build a core group of players around in the current NFL salary cap era, you can only do that with young talented players on their first or second contract.
So all you have to do is look back at the original trade the Buffalo Bills made to acquire Stefon Diggs to prove my point of trading Diggs this year is a good deal.
It was before the 2020 NFL draft that the Buffalo Bills sent their 2020 first-round draft pick along with a 5th round, 6th round pick in 2020, a fourth-round pick in 2021 for Diggs, and a 2020 seventh-round pick.
The move was considered a win for the Bills as Diggs turned out to be a Pro-Bowl player for the Bills over the past couple of seasons. But is it who the Vikings drafted in the first round of the 2020 draft and shines a spotlight on why the Bills should make a similar trade this season before the NFL draft.
The Vikings selected Justin Jefferson with the 22nd overall pick that year and Jefferson has become a star in the league. For his career, Jefferson has played in 33 games and caught 196 passes for 3016 yards along with 17 touchdowns.
Pretty similar numbers for Stefon Diggs over the past two years.
This year is another deep class for wide receivers and with Diggs' cap number over $17 million dollars, trading him for a number of picks including a first-rounder this year would make complete sense.
You would get a talented wideout who would be on his rookie contract for at least the next four years which is key since Josh Allen signed his extension. Even if the draft pick doesn't produce as much as Diggs did last season, Josh Allen has shown his love to spread the ball around between his wide receivers, tight ends, and running backs.
So even with Diggs signing a new contract extension, now is the time to take a chance on a deep group of wideouts and trade Stefon Diggs this offseason. Plus it is easier to send Diggs to another team since they know they would have him for at least 6 more years.
