There is one activity that people from all over Western New York love to enjoy in the winter and it may also be the worst for some!

The weather forecast is calling for quite a bit of lake effect snow to return to portions of Western New York. As we start the week, there are warnings posted for a lake effect snow storm that is expected to drop nearly a foot of fresh snow south, and east, of Buffalo, New York.

The snow has been on again - off again, and when it does arrive, it seems to be heavy! That is just the beauty of living near a Great Lake in the winter.

But for those of us who have lived here our entire lives, and are raising kids here in Western New York, it is all about embracing the winter.

The weather was just about perfect this past weekend for a fun afternoon of sledding at Chestnut Ridge Park in Orchard Park.

We took our four kids and their new snow tubes and joined dozens of other families who were looking to burn off some energy and get some fresh air! It is a tradition to sled down the hills at Chestnut Ridge! But it may be the best and worst activity depending on your perspective!

Why Is It The Best Activity?

If you have little ones at home and need a fun, FREE way to get some fresh air and burn off some of the winter energy that makes them wild in the house, a day on the sledding hill is perfect! In fact, our kids slept the best that they have slept in months after just a couple hours on the sled, or tube as the case may be.

Why Is It The Worst Activity?

This may also be the worst choice for some families who don't love to walk up a large, snow covered hill. After round two, I found myself carrying one kid over my shoulder and pulling another up the hill! I love the exercise and really enjoyed the time with the kids. However, I could easily see why some families were asking why there is not a tow rope for the sled hill? It can get exhausting after a few runs down the steep hill.

We will be back to sled the hill a few more times this winter and it's the thrill, and speed, of the hill that the kids will look forward to. And the smile on their faces, and the cardio workout that I can't wait to enjoy!
