There are few ways to really show our appreciation to the massive number of Veterans in New York State. However, for those who have served, and love the outdoors, New York State has something special.

The days are shorter and the cooler air is here! Hunting season is underway in New York State and it is time to get to the woods or the water. Whether it is big game, or waterfowl, New York State has some fantastic hunting.

But for those who have sacrificed so much for our freedoms, and protection, there is a special hunting season to enjoy.

According to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation: "Two hunting days for veterans and active-duty military members were added in four of the five waterfowl zones. During the designated days, veterans and active-duty military members can hunt migratory game birds. Daily bag limits are the same as the regular season".

In the Western Region of New York State, the special waterfowl season for Veterans is November 9 and 10.

For the Long Island area Veterans who want to hunt birds, the special season is November 16 and 17.

"Any person who meets the definition of active military or veteran (as defined in section 101 of title 38, United States Code) can participate".

It is a small, but exciting way for New York State to show appreciation for our Veterans and get them back to the outdoors. We are blessed to have so many great resources and places to hunt. When you get outside of the city limits, New York is a bountiful state for wild game!
