Amazing News About These Snowmobiles in New York State
As we begin the month of August, the last thing you may be thinking about is snowmobiling. But here in New York State, there is some exciting news for riders looking ahead to the next snowmobile season.
Even if you’re currently enjoying your dirt bike, e-bike, or ATV during the summer months, it’s worth thinking ahead. The next time you register an older snowmobile, you could end up paying a lot less.
Winter is Not THAT Far Away
It seems like just yesterday we were talking about how incredible the trail conditions were this past winter. It was a cold season, and the snow stuck around well into late winter and early spring. If you spent any time riding in the Tug Hill region, you know it was one of the best seasons in recent memory.

Will we see another great winter? Only time will tell. If you’ve been thinking about buying a snowmobile during the offseason, the early outlook is certainly encouraging.

Vintage Snowmobile Registration in New York State
According to reports, New York State will allow owners of vintage or classic snowmobiles, machines that are more than 30 years old based on the current registration year, to register them for just $25. A portion of that fee will still go toward the New York State Snowmobile Trail Fund.
"The new law allows snowmobiles older than 30 years from the current registration year to be registered annually for a fee of $25 for any snowmobile owned by a current NYSSA club member with twenty of the twenty-five going to the trail fund".
There is one important requirement. To qualify for the discounted registration, you must be an active member of a New York State snowmobile club at the time you register your sled.
"Additionally, registration fees are discounted for members of organized snowmobile clubs that are a part of the New York State Snowmobile Association. All fees collected will go directly toward snowmobile trail development and maintenance, ensuring that riders across the state can enjoy safe, well-maintained, and accessible trails for years to come".
Snowmobile clubs across New York State do a tremendous job maintaining thousands of miles of trails. While many riders only see the finished product during the winter, the work happens year-round, including during the hottest months of summer. Club volunteers also work closely with private landowners to secure permission for trail access. Without those partnerships, many of New York’s snowmobile trails simply wouldn’t exist.
If you’re an active club member in 2027 and own a 1997 model year or older snowmobile, you could save a significant amount on your registration this season.
Too Early to Think Snow?
I’m not quite ready to think about winter yet. I’m still enjoying summer, and I certainly don’t want to rush past another beautiful fall here in New York State. That said, I’ve already noticed a few snowmobiles for sale, and it definitely brought back memories of those unforgettable afternoons riding the trails with friends and family after a fresh snowfall.
