This is great.

The United States Navy Band put out a video yesterday of their version of Taylor Swift's "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together."

....In the style of a sea shanty.

Check it out.

As it turns out, not everyone was in love with this version, specifically in calling it a sea shanty.

The Navy Chief of Information Twitter account posted the following message:

"This generated some strong opinions! While this shanty parody may not be your jam, I'm thankful for the talent, creativity & sense of humor of our @usnavyband!"

I think this version is so fun, and a great way to introduce the Navy Band (and more traditional sea shanties) to a new audience. I know I lost a good 30 minutes in a sea shanty playlist.

Here's the U.S. Navy Band's performance of "American Anthem" from the inauguration ceremony on January 20.

The history of the U.S. Navy Band is fascinating. From their website:

"While the warships existed and the construction of new frigates was under way by order of Congress in 1794, it was in on April 30, 1798 that Congress established the Department of the Navy, bringing greater organization and stature to the Navy. In May of that same year, the USS Ganges became the first ship put to sea under the command of Captain Robert Dale. Capt. Dale's orders very clearly stated that he was to assemble an enlisted crew that included 21 privates, 1 sergeant, 1 corporal and 2 musicians to serve as Marines. Those two musicians were a fifer and a drummer, a combination that had persisted throughout the Revolutionary War and would show up on the personnel listings of subsequent ships."

Since then the band has expanded considerably, but music has always been a part of the U.S. Navy!
