EPA Says Protect Your Pets During Wildfire Smoke in New York State
The smoke from all the wildfires in Canada is making it harder and harder to breathe in New York State. There are hundreds of wildfires in Canada and the wildfire smoke has traveled to the United States and the levels in New York State have reached the 4th stage (out of 6) in terms of severity.
A lot of places are cancelling events and sports to keep people safe and indoors. But, what about pets? Some people are mad that dog owners have been leaving their dogs outside in the haze and smoke. Does it affect them? Does it hurt when they breathe?
Short nosed dogs especially pugs or bulldogs may have a hard time if they are outside in the smoke for too long.
What does the EPA say about pets being in the wildfire smoke?
According to the EPA's website:
Smoke can irritate your pet’s eyes and respiratory tract. Evidence in humans indicates that the effects of exposure to smoke and heat together are much worse than to smoke alone. This is also likely true for your pets. Animals that are older, younger or pregnant or have heart or lung disease are especially at risk from smoke or heat and should be closely watched during all periods of poor air quality
What should you do if you have a pet and how can you plan with the wildfire smoke?
"Plan to keep your home cool and filter the indoor air. Buy a portable air cleaner and high-efficiency HVAC filters if they are compatible with your central air system. Learn how to adjust your air conditioner to keep smoke out. See the Indoor Air Filtration and Protect Yourself from Smoke and Heat Wildfire Guide fact sheets for more information"
Can I use an air conditioner in my house while the wildfire smoke is outside?
Officials say yes you can use your air conditioner if you have an HVAC system, but they do recommend making sure that your filter is fresh and new. If you have a window unit, the EPA is concerned about smoke that may get filtered into the house.
