If you’re not sure what Halloween candy to get this year, there is one that trick-or-treaters in New York state absolutely love.

Halloween and trick-or-treating is right around the corner, and if you’re not sure what to get this year for the kids, we have a few ideas.

When Did Trick-Or-Treating Begin?

The origin of trick-or-treating goes back as far as to the 16th century. Back then, those who aren’t as fortunate would visit the houses of weather families and receive pastries called “soul cakes” in exchange for a promise to pray for the souls of the homeowners’ relatives who had since passed away. The practice was later taken up by children, according to History, who would go from door to door asking for gifts such as food, money and ale.

National Geographic reported that candy had first made its appearance in the 1800s at Halloween parties as taffy that children could pull. Now, candy is considered to be the go-to “treat,” though there are still some houses that try to give out apples or clementines every year.
