For skiers, that means it's time to get the skis all tuned up and ready to go so that when the first real measurable amount of snow falls, they can be ready.

Of course, there are a couple of different types of skiers.  There are downhill skiers that really let gravity do the work.

Then there are cross-country skiers.  Now, these people are die-hards.

Cross country skiing is an incredible amount of work.  It's also an amazing form of exercise.  The good news is that once you've got your skis and poles, (and of course lots of warm clothing) it's pretty easy to pick up.  It relies on some pretty natural movements.  The best part of it all is that in many cases you can ski for free in many places across Western New York.  While many of the trails are ungroomed, they're still marked to make sure you can stay on track.

If you're looking to get out of the house this winter, without paying hundreds or thousands of dollars for an outdoor sport.  Maybe you're looking to just get away from other people and close to nature. Cross-country skiing could be the answer for you.

I'd encourage you to call ahead to find out if they have special rules before you get there.  Check out some of the places where you can go to get your cross-country ski in right here
