Massive “Spill” Shuts Down New York State Thruway

As if we needed more to worry about as we get ready for the traffic headaches the solar eclipse is expected to bring, there was a stressful commute on the New York State Thruway this week.

Many are on break from school, and the traffic this week has been lighter than it would normally be. However, for those on their way to work or an appointment on Wednesday, it was anything but a vacation for them.

As the peak of rush hour was happening, some sort of "spill" occurred near the exit for route 400.

The NYS DOT and other crews were quick on the scene and seemed to bring out the entire arsenal of equipment to get the mess cleaned up. From one of the NITTEC Cameras, we could see a snowplow, a street cleaning vacuum and, eventually, a water truck used to get the spill cleaned up.

The first report we had was that the spill appeared to be some sort of grain. The second, which seemed to be confirmed at one point, was that it was flour and eventually we had reported it to be sand.

The crews had their hands full as whatever was spilled, was being driven over and packed to the pavement. It made a mess and whoever the driver of the truck hauling the material had to be upset with losing some of the load.

Keep in mind, there will be a huge influx of traffic coming to view the eclipse in New York State. Be ready for delays.
