There is a big anniversary being celebrated this week as one of the most popular television stations in New York State is crossing a major milestone.

The local television world has changed dramatically over the last 75 years. With new technology, less staff and new competition from social media, it is hard for local TV to survive and stay relevant. However, the ones that stay the most local will always win and that seems to be the key to staying on the air for 75 years!

It is a big week for viewers in Rochester, New York as New 8 WROC is celebrating 75 years on the air.

According to Wikipedia:

WROC-TV is Rochester's oldest television station, signing on June 11, 1949, as WHAM-TV, an NBC affiliate on channel 6. It was owned originally by Stromberg-Carlson, a telephone equipment manufacturer, along with WHAM radio.

With a 24 hour news cycle and platforms like X and Facebook, television has a handful of competitors. But stations like WROC have been able to adapt and the on air talent have become so much more than just "talking heads". Having personalities deliver local information keeps viewers interested. It is a balancing act between being credible as a journalist and at the same time being relatable.

Super Bowl 58 will most like go down as the most watched of all time and may be one of the biggest TV audiences ever. Although many may have a differing opinion, the fact is that people still watch TV if there is something they care about or relates to them.
