The future of the McKinley Mall is still up in the air after a potential sale seems to have fallen through.

Like many shopping malls across the country, the McKinley Mall is still looking for a direction.  What used to be one of the busiest shopping areas in Western New York is once again going to be looking for a new owner.

What is in the McKinley Mall now?

If it's been a while since you've shopped at the mall, there are still vendors there.  You'll still find stores like Barnes & Noble and Old Navy.  Many of the big stores like Sears, Bed, Bath, & Beyond, and others have left but there are still a bunch of small businesses that have rented storefronts there.  They're working very hard to help keep the mall alive.

Wasn't the McKinley Mall sold a few months ago?

In 2021, a group called Kohan Retail Investment Group purchased the property.  They finalized a deal for $8.5 million.  In a surprise move though, in 2023, they announced that they would be holding an auction to sell it.  That auction was unsuccessful.

Then in October of 2023, Kohan had said that they were in talks with Benderson Development to sell the property but that a deal had not been made final yet.

Talks fall through with Benderson Development

According to Buffalo Business First, Mike Kohan of Kohan Retail Investment Group said that the deal was out of contract.  So according to Kohan, Benderson Development will not be buying the McKinley Mall.  Instead, they plan to try to bring more retail into the area rather than trying to continue selling the mall.
