This Friday is Groundhog Day and while the world waits to see if Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow, there is a great weather predictor here in New York State.

It has been an annual tradition for close to 150 years, and activists are attempting to modify the holiday and how it will be celebrated in the years to come.

We’re big fans of Groundhog Day here at ScreenCrush — I mean, we did just pick it as number one on our list of the 25 Best Comedies of the Last 25 Years — so this news, via The Hollywood Reporter, has us excited: Groundhog Day is coming to Broadway on January 23, 2017. A new version of Groundhog Day! It feels like we’re living the same story over and over and over again! But with, like, music this time.

Groundhog Day is this Sunday.  You already know the Groundhog Day story. It’s been going on every February 2 since 1887 in Punxsutawney, Penn., when Punxsutawney Phil makes his prediction on whether we’re going to get an early spring. But what do you know about groundhogs?

It’s a tradition going on since 1887 - Groundhog Day in Punxatawney, Pennsylvania.   Kind of a mid-winter festival based on European folklore that if a badger wanders from his burrow and sees his shadow, there’ll be six more weeks of winter.  If he doesn’t see his shadow, spring is right around the corner.
