Congratulations to this week's Hometown Heroes: The Village of Farnham Volunteer Fire Company. Here is their story:

The Village of Farnham Fire Department was founded August 7, 1923 and incorporated May 1, 1959. It is located in the Town of Brant nestled between routes 5 and 20. The department is made up of 50 members or so. We are the primary ambulance for the town and the primary fire service for the village. Our department is made up of three pieces of fire apparatus, a rescue pumper, a pumper and an ambulance.

We are always finding ways to work with the community by assisting in many public activities, such as, Adopt A Highway, helping the residents assemble the new playground at the village park. Our Ladies Auxiliary, which was founded in 1970, assists us with whatever is asked of them, as well as having fundraisers of their own.

An Explorer Post was started in 1997 for those young men and women interested in the fire service. At the present time I am the head advisor and am proud to say the program has taken many of the community’s youths and turned them into firefighters, with some of them training to be line officers and assistant chiefs.

In former years when we had many more members, we had a respectable Drum Corp and have kept our first fire truck, a 1939 Buffalo, which is housed in our hall and used for special occasions.

We would like to give a special mention to the following:

Peter Chiavetta Jr. – Our newest member

Eric Zeffiro – Our newest graduate from Firefighter 1

Sue Seneca-Russell – Our newest EMT

Aslin Rovnak – Our newest Explorer

Andrea McEvoy – 2012 EMS Leadership Award winner for Erie and Wyoming Regions

Our firefighting family would like to request that your thoughts and prayers be with our 50 year senior member James Militello.
