Did You Watch One Of These Big Summer Movies In 2002?
Freezing air conditioning. Sticky floors. Buttery fingers. Giant boxes of candy. Man, isn’t going to the movies during the summer the best?
When people think “summer,” their mind usually goes first to outdoor activities - swimming, biking, baseball, you know the deal. But what if it’s raining outside? What if it’s so hot you can’t step out the door without breaking into a sweat? An afternoon trip to the movies to the rescue!
Summer is definitively the best time to take a break from reality and head to the movies.
With kids being off from school and adults spending less time at work, the summer season is prime time for seeing a movie at your favorite local theatre. All of the major film studios know this - that’s why most of their biggest blockbusters are released between June and September.
Twenty years ago, we didn’t have Netflix at our disposal to watch a movie with the push of a button. Going to the movies was an event. We planned for days ahead of time, scanning the newspaper for showtimes and praying the concession stand wouldn’t be out of Skittles. Remembering the feeling of finding the perfect seats (no recliners back then!) and waiting with jittery anticipation for the previews to start still makes us smile. Then, the lights would go dim, and we were transported to another world for two to three hours, while our parents got a chance to take a much-needed break from the summer chaos (or take a nap, if you’re like my Dad).
