Easter is almost here, and people are getting ready with all kinds of holiday traditions. In Western New York, that means making or buying a butter lamb for their dinner table. One family may have just made the record books with one that they created.

What is a butter lamb?

On the outside, a butter lamb is simply a stick (or multiple sticks) of butter that is shaped to look like a lamb. It's a Polish tradition that is filled with symbolism. The eyes are normally made with peppercorns, and there's a red ribbon tied around its neck to symbolize the blood of Christ. The lamb itself is a symbol of the sacrifice of Jesus.

There are multiple ways to get them

If you'd like to have one on your table this year, there are a couple of ways to get one. The easiest is to simply go to the store and buy one. They're normally available at most grocery stores here in Western New York, and they're a very popular thing to get at the Broadway Market.

You can also make your own. There are a couple of methods to make them. Some include molds that you fill with butter, then freeze, and others involve stacking the sticks of butter and simply sculpting it as you go.

A Western New York Family makes an enormous butter lamb

You may remember the Garbatowicz family from a couple of years ago. They had created a 22 lb butter lamb, something they've been doing for over 10 years. The tradition actually began for their family back in the 70's when their dad wanted to create the biggest butter lamb. The tradition of creating the butter lamb went away after their father passed, but was brought back a few years ago.

This year, they've surpassed that amount and created a 25 lb butter lamb.

The biggest question we have after watching them create this, is what they do with it all after easter is over. Is it possible to eat 25 pounds of butter?
