The lake effect machine has dumped multiple feet of snow over portions east of the Great Lakes in New York State. The snow event brings a reminder to all homeowners in The Empire State.

The Buffalo Bills and San Francisco 49ers are prepping to face off in a Sunday Night game in Western New York as thousands of fans are shoveling the snow to help get the seats clear for the game.

But as fun as it may be to get ready for an NFL game, there are dangers lurking at home that require your attention.

If you own a home, there are a few things to keep in mind. When the snow gets so deep, you need to get to work. Not just on the driveway and sidewalk, but in other ways to keep your family safe.

1. Make sure you clean out the vent for the heating system that you have. Newer models will shut down if they can't vent the CO properly. Older models may back the CO up in to a home if the vents are not cleared.

2. Don't use a fireplace without inspection. If it has been a year or more since you last used the fireplace, check it or have a professional do so. Chimney fires and smoke backing up in a home can be serious.

3. IF you have to shovel a roof, be careful of the power lines that are overhead. The roof rakes are nice but can cause a major shock if you come in to contact with the power lines.

4. Keep the ice off the walkways. As we order more online, the delivery people will be in and out. For their safety and for your protection legally, it may be a good idea to remove the ice.
