The spring is here and the warm weather and the bugs are back, finally. It took awhile, but the weather is starting to cooperate for those who have outdoor plans and are ready to get some things done around the house. But the good spring also brings out the wildlife in full force and that includes the black bears around the area.

Colden residents report seeing a large, adult bear in their neighborhood.

In a post on the Colden Neighbors Facebook page, it was noted that...

Bear spotted in the area (Monday evening) My husband was driving home from work and spotted him crossing Patridge, while he was driving on Hayes Hollow. The full grown bear was heading north.

The wildlife has been getting more active and seeing a bear is really not that surprising but it is something to be aware of. It was just last week that Amherst Police reminded and warned it's residents to watch for baby deer. It is also the time of the year for fawns and bear cubs to be born. Female deer (doe) will leave their newborn behind in tall grass and brush to hide them from predators. If you see them, leave them. Most likely mom is not far away.

As for bears, keep trash and food stored properly and it may be a good idea to keep your bird feeders limited or stored. Bears will gladly take a snack from your yard if the opportunity presents itself!
