There is a scam that is happening in New York that you should be aware of. A woman in Central New York learned the hard way when she lost thousands of dollars.

According to Metro Source News:

State Police say 40-year-old Earl Smith ran a lottery scam taking a 84-year-old Canandaigua woman for more than ten-grand. Police say he told her she won a sweepstakes and just had to pay the taxes on her prize. Smith was extradited from New Jersey and was remanded to jail on 20-thousand-dollars bail.

If you did not personally enter a contest or lottery, be vary careful with who you send money to. If a prize sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
