New York State Boating Safety Certificate Required

Under New York State law, anyone operating a motorized boat must have a boating safety certificate.

This requirement became fully effective in 2025 as part of a statewide effort to improve safety and reduce accidents on the water.

"This comprehensive course teaches the fundamental skills of safe boating operation and encourages common sense and courtesy to all who share the water".

Getting certified is relatively simple. Boaters must complete an approved safety course, which is available both in person and online.
