Bills Hire Longtime NFL Coach To Help The Offense

The Buffalo Bills have been extremely busy over the last 48 hours. That makes sense, since the legal tampering period with unrestricted NFL free agents started on Monday at noon.

The Bills re-signed wide receiver/kick returner Isaiah McKenzie to a two-year contract on Sunday. Then on Monday, the team gave center Mitch Morse a two-year contract extension which keeps him in Buffalo through 2024.

The Bills released offensive lineman Daryl Williams and signed guard Rodger Saffold and defensive tackles DaQuan Johnson and Tim Settle.

The Bills made two more moves on Tuesday morning, but not with the roster. The team hired one coach and promoted another.

The coach extended was Eric Washington, who was promoted to senior defensive assistant and defensive line coach.

The new hire is longtime NFL coach Mike Shula as the Bills new senior offensive assistant.

Shula has been coaching since 1988, mostly as an offensive assistant in the NFL (quarterbacks coach, coordinator). He was also the University of Alabama’s head coach from 2003-2006, before Nick Saban was hired.

Shula has spent the past two seasons as the quarterbacks coach with the Denver Broncos and reunites with Sean McDermott and Ken Dorsey, who he worked with when he was the offensive coordinator of the Carolina Panthers.

Shula was the OC in Carolina when Cam Newton was at his best. It feels like Shula’s reputation is his failed stint at Alabama, but he’s been a very good assistant in the NFL. He should be a great fit with Dorsey and new quarterbacks coach, Joe Brady.
