Western New York is all too familiar with this situation from this year's controversy in Lancaster, NY, over the use of mascot name 'Redskins'. Though, the Lancaster Central School District had already removed the redskin name from all jerseys in years prior, the pressure was still on from the Native American community to change the name completely.

Flash forward to this weekend when California Governor, Jerry Brown, announced the ban of the mascot name 'Redskins' from every California public school. According to Yahoo:

The most populous state in the country has now taken a stand against the use of this insidious slur in its schools," activists from the group Change the Mascot said in a statement on Sunday. California is "standing on the right side of history by bringing an end to the use of the demeaning and damaging R-word slur in the state's schools."
