Popular Toy Banned From Camps in New York State

It is amazing how quickly trends and fads come and go in New York State. We have four little ones under the age of 10, and it always seems like just when I start to think I’m cool, there’s something new they’re interested in.

I’m not sure if it’s because of social media, the speed at which trends spread, or if I’m simply getting older, but staying “hip” isn’t nearly as easy as it used to be.

The summer is in full swing across New York State, and aside from a few smoky days caused by Canadian wildfire smoke, we’ve enjoyed some fantastic weather. Families are spending time outdoors, kids are heading to summer camps, and many are taking road trips or vacations. From Buffalo to Albany, it’s been a great summer to enjoy everything New York has to offer.

Summer Camps Are Seeing a Growing Problem

According to some local camps, counselors, and staff members, one of the biggest challenges this summer hasn’t been the weather, it’s the latest toy craze.

Some parents have received letters asking that certain trendy toys and collectibles stay home instead of being brought to camp.

Squishies and Collectibles Are Becoming a Distraction

Have your kids become obsessed with Squishies, Critters, or other collectible toys? Have you been racing to local stores hoping to find the latest release before they sell out?

If so, you’re definitely not alone!

Millions of families are trying to get their hands on these popular collectibles, and kids can’t seem to get enough of them. But really… how many Squishies does one child actually need? And what’s the deal with squishy butter?

Unfortunately, the popularity of these toys has created problems at many camps. Counselors say the items are becoming major distractions as kids trade them, argue over them, or even report them missing or stolen.

"Please be advised that squishies/needohs and critters (tiny plastic animals) are no longer permitted at camp. Due to the overwhelming amount of lost, stolen and broken items and conflicts created by trading these items should not be brought to camp".

Rather than focusing on camp activities, many children are focused on their collectibles, making it more difficult for counselors to keep everyone engaged.

It feels like I was just starting to understand those crazes when they disappeared and something new took their place.

In fact, I’m just getting the hang of using some of today’s slang, only to have my kids tell me it’s already outdated.
