New York State Has Set a Maximum Temperature for Schools
Believe it or not, summer heat does arrive in New York State, even after chilly spring mornings, soaking rain, and the occasional late-season snow shower.
Right now, much of New York is still dealing with a stubborn return to cold temperatures, but residents know how quickly that can change. Before long, the final weeks of school will be here, kids will be counting down to summer vacation, and classrooms across the Empire State will begin heating up in a hurry.
That is why New York State now has an official maximum classroom temperature for public schools.
Kids Are Already Counting Down Summer Vacation In New York
For many families, the final two months of school can feel like the longest stretch of the year.
Our kids have been counting down the days for a while now. Somehow, they always know the exact number of school days left before summer break. Summer camps are being planned, family trips are getting circled on the calendar, and everyone is looking forward to those warm nights outside with friends.
But before we officially get there, there is still plenty of classroom time left, and warmer weather is coming.
After A Brutal Winter, Summer Will Feel Amazing In New York
This past winter was brutal, to say the least.
At times it felt like it would never end, especially here in Western New York. There was an incredible amount of snowfall, but beyond the snow was the relentless cold. February felt more like living in the Arctic Circle than living in New York State.

Ice piled up on rooftops, buildings were covered for weeks, and many of us were simply trying to survive until spring. But that is part of living here, the dramatic change of seasons. Once spring finally turns the corner, summertime comes fast.
I always joke that New York really has only two seasons: winter and construction. Now that the orange cones are lining the highways and yellow flashing lights are popping up on roadways everywhere, construction season has officially begun, and that usually means the heat is not far behind.
New York State Has Set A Maximum Temperature For School Classrooms
As of September 1, 2025, New York State enacted a classroom heat safety law for public schools.
Under that law, once a classroom temperature reaches 82 degrees, schools are required to take action to reduce the heat and keep students comfortable. That can include shutting off overhead lights, pulling down blinds, using fans, opening windows, and giving students extra water breaks.
If the classroom temperature reaches 88 degrees, students and staff must be removed from that room whenever practical.
"A new law sets 88 degrees as the maximum temperature for occupancy of all spaces used by students in public school buildings, beginning in September 2025. Gov. Kathy Hochul approved the measure in mid-December".
This is the first time New York has ever established a statewide maximum temperature standard for school buildings.
For many older schools across New York State, especially those without central air conditioning, this could become a major issue during late May, June, and even the first few weeks of September.
Remember How Hot School Used To Get?
Do you remember those hot school days when we were kids?
Teachers would shut off the lights hoping it would somehow make the room cooler. Windows would get cranked open, giant fans would start humming in the corner, and every student would pray for a breeze.
Of course, opening the windows usually meant one thing, eventually a bee would fly into the classroom and total chaos would break out. Back then, air conditioning in classrooms was almost unheard of.
And honestly, even here in 2026, there are still many school buildings across New York State with very limited cooling systems, if they have any at all. Fans can help, but they only do so much when temperatures start climbing and dozens of kids are packed into one room.
Teachers know it, parents know it, and students definitely know it.
Warmer Days Are Coming Fast Across New York State
Even though it may not feel like summer this week, it is coming.
The final stretch of the school year is always a whirlwind in New York State. Before long, kids will be asking to ride their bikes to school, walk home with friends, and daydream through class about summer vacation plans.
And now, thanks to New York’s new classroom heat law, schools will have to be watching those temperatures just as closely as students watch the calendar.
Because once New York heats up, those old school buildings heat up fast too.
