Police officers (and residents of New York State) are all raising their eyebrows at a brand new law that was proposed in New York State and people are not happy.

Officers would not be able to do this at routine traffic stops, and people would call it dangerous. Here is the new proposal in New York State, according to the New York Post:

The proposed legislation would no longer allow officers to stop or search drivers over such issues as busted head or tail lights, expired registrations and inspections, window tints, and even the smell of marijuana.

Cops No Longer Be Able To Do This at Traffic Stops in New York State?

New York State Sen. Brady Hoylman-Sigal sponsored the bill. Of course, the bill is not officially a law yet, but if it is, it could be seriously dangerous for police. Routine traffic stops sometimes do not actually end up being routine, and if there are bad people out on the roads, wouldn't you want those bad people off the road and not behind a steering wheel?

We spoke to some police officers from local departments in Western New York, who don't even think that the bill has any chance of becoming law because it is such a risk. After all, there are laws against such things as driving with a busted tail light, tinted windows, and more that are, in fact, unsafe. That is what the police officers are for, to begin with--to keep us safe.

It is interesting why an elected official would want something like this into law from the beginning. What do you think? If you are in law enforcement in New York State, what would you want to see?
