Dion Dawkins Signs Massive Extension with the Bills
NFL free agency is here.
The legal tampering period has begun across the NFL, which means pending free agents are allowed to talk and negotiate with teams. They cannot officially sign a contract until later in the week, however.
The Buffalo Bills made plenty of cap-saving moves last Wednesday, including releasing Jordan Poyer, Tre'Davious White, Mitch Morse, Siran Neal and Deonte Harty. That, along with moves like restructuring Dawson Knox helped save money against the salary cap.
Now, the Bills decided to extend and lock up one of their most important players.
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Bills have extended left tackle Dion Dawkins.
Dawkins' new contract is for 3 years at $60 million. The new extension makes Dion the fourth-highest paid tackle in the NFL.
This also likely helps save the Bills some money in the short team. It allows Dawkins to play the next four years in Buffalo and likely end his career with the Bills. It's something that made sense for both teams.
The Bills announced it officially as well.
Dawkins posted cryptic stuff on social media the last few days, including fooling everyone 15 minutes before the news of the extension broke, by pretending he was leaving Buffalo.
It's not clear exactly how much money the Bills now have in cap space. They had $12.5 million according to Spotrac, before the Dawkins extension. His cap hit in 2024 was over $16 million but we are assuming that number is smaller now.
It remains to be seen if the Bills actually make free agent signings today or tomorrow, with limited financial space.
