Do Americans think people with a Southern accent are uneducated?  Are people from New York City rude?  Are people with a Brittish accent more sophisticated?  A Harrris Poll conducted earlier this year shows how some Americans seem to perceive people with accents.

An accent can tell people where you're from.  But it can also make an impression on them about who you may be.  According to a Harris Poll, nearly half of adults who responded to the survey felt that people with a Southern Accent were nice and 34 percent felt they were honest.  But 38 percent also think they're uneducated.

If you speak with an accent from New York City, you could be perceived as rude from 51 percent of the people who took the survey.

Meanwhile, if you want to be perceived as intelligent and sophisticated, maybe try out the Brittish accent.
