The world is mourning the loss of a country music icon as we remember the life and legacy of Dolly Parton.

Dolly Parton had an incredible impact on country music around the world, but perhaps even more importantly, she had an impact on people. There is no doubt that some part of you was inspired, encouraged or simply made to smile because of Dolly’s personality, music or generosity.

When the news broke on August 25 that Dolly Parton had passed away at the age of 80, I couldn’t help but get a little emotional. I have been working in country music for more than 30 years, and Dolly has always been a staple, no matter how much the music industry has changed.

Dolly set a standard for how people should treat one another within the music industry. That was not only part of the reason for her incredible success as a music icon, but also a big part of what made her such a great person.

We are all better people because of the life Dolly Parton lived.

Dolly Parton Remembered at the Country Music Hall of Fame

I had a chance to talk with some friends who were visiting Nashville on the same day Dolly Parton passed away.

My friend Jim and his wife were in the Nashville area and visiting the Country Music Hall of Fame when the news was announced. Within just a matter of hours, people began flooding into the area dedicated to Dolly, her music and her memory.

It is likely that Jim and his wife were among the first people from Western New York to sign the book of condolences at Dolly’s exhibit at the Country Music Hall of Fame.

Jim said it was quite a scene. People were emotional, and media members were quickly arriving to capture the moment shortly after the news of Dolly’s passing was released.

It was a powerful reminder of just how many lives Dolly touched throughout her career.

Dolly Parton’s Legacy Goes Far Beyond Country Music

We feel like we have lost a family member or close friend since Dolly has passed away.

Her music will live on for generations. Songs such as “Jolene,” “9 to 5” and “I Will Always Love You” have become part of the fabric of country music and American culture. But I think Dolly’s greatest impact goes far beyond the songs she wrote and recorded.

It was her vibrant personality, kindness and generosity that made her so special.

Dolly understood the importance of giving back. Through her charitable work, including the Imagination Library, she helped countless children and families. Her generosity became just as much a part of her legacy as her music.

She showed the world that you could become one of the biggest stars in the world while still treating people with kindness and compassion.

Thank You, Dolly Parton

Thank you, Dolly, for teaching us what it looks like to give back.

Thank you for the music.

Thank you for the laughter.

Thank you for the kindness.

And thank you for reminding us that success isn’t just about how much you accomplish. It is also about how you make other people feel along the way.

Dolly Parton was generous, genuine and authentic throughout her incredible life and career. Her music will continue to introduce new generations to her remarkable talent, but her example of kindness and generosity may ultimately be her greatest legacy.

Rest in eternal peace, Dolly. May you rest with the glory of God.
