Poloncarz called out the business after they announced that they were laying off more than 180 people. He said that after the latest round of layoffs the company should not be allowed to keep the naming rights to the Bills stadium.

The company closed its Derby, New York plant last year.

According to WIVB, New Era announced that the 187 layoffs were coming just months after the company received several million dollars in government help.

The move comes less than three months after New Era was awarded between $5 million and $10 million in federal Paycheck Protection Program funds, according to U.S. Treasury records.

Of the 187 layoffs, 117 were happening at New Era's corporate headquarters in downtown Buffalo.

Senator Chuck Schumer also weighted in one the layoffs.

“They’ve gotten money through federal aid. They were entitled to it,” Schumer said. “But then the minute the program ends, for them to cut their employees out is a bad idea. There is a better alternative, which I mentioned to New Era this morning. It’s called the Work Share Program.”

New Era signed the naming rights deal with the county and the Bills back in 2016 that was for 7 years and worth $35 million dollars.
