New York Hunter Arrested After Falling for Fake Turkey Trap
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Environmental Conservation Officers (ECOs) were extremely busy during the spring of 2026. With multiple fishing seasons underway and the spring turkey season wrapping up, officers spent countless hours patrolling New York’s woods, fields, and waterways. Their efforts led to several arrests and citations involving illegal outdoor activities across the state.
Fishing Season Is in Full Swing Across New York State
Summer has officially arrived, and anglers across New York State are taking advantage of some of the best fishing opportunities of the year. Have you had any luck on the water yet?
Black bass season is now open statewide and remains one of the most popular fishing seasons in New York. Whether you’re casting a line on a quiet pond, a flowing river, or one of the state’s many lakes, there are endless opportunities to enjoy the outdoors.

However, with those opportunities comes responsibility. New York State has strict hunting and fishing regulations designed to protect wildlife populations and ensure public safety. Without these laws and conservation efforts, the balance of fish and wildlife populations could quickly be disrupted.

DEC Officers Use Fake Turkey Decoy to Catch Violator
According to a recent press release from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, Environmental Conservation Officers used a realistic turkey decoy as part of a spring turkey season enforcement operation.
The decoy was placed in an area where officers could monitor hunter behavior and identify potential violations. During the operation, officers were able to apprehend an individual who allegedly shot at the decoy illegally. The investigation also uncovered several additional violations, resulting in multiple charges.
"On the morning of May 10, ECOs Brown, Dorrett, Heckler, and Hilton utilized a robotic turkey decoy for a detail focused on illegal road hunting in Williamstown. Before long, ECOs observed a vehicle driving down the roadway slowly before turning around and coming to a stop near the location of the decoy. The driver discharged a shotgun from the vehicle which was stopped in the middle of the roadway and then sped off when two ECOs emerged from the tree line and announced their presence".
Operations like these are commonly used by wildlife enforcement agencies to deter poaching and ensure hunters are following state laws.
Hunters Already Looking Ahead to Deer Season
While spring hunting seasons have come to an end, many New York hunters are already focused on the upcoming whitetail deer season.
This fall is expected to bring several changes and continued discussion among hunters. Two topics generating significant interest are the transfer of DMPs (Deer Management Permits) and the state’s Earn-A-Buck-style program that could affect how hunters obtain an additional buck tag.
Regardless of any changes that may be implemented, hunters are encouraged to stay informed and understand all regulations before heading into the field. Following the rules helps keep hunters safe while also ensuring healthy and sustainable wildlife populations for future generations.
Get Your Hunting License Before Fall Arrives
If you do not currently have the proper hunting licenses or certifications, now is a great time to prepare for the upcoming season.
New York makes it easier than ever to complete required hunter education courses and purchase hunting licenses online. Taking care of those requirements now can save time and help ensure you’re ready when hunting seasons begin this fall.
As always, knowing the regulations and hunting responsibly are essential parts of preserving New York’s outdoor traditions.
