There’s something special about standing on the bank of a quiet pond with a worm on the line, waiting for a largemouth bass to strike. For many New Yorkers, bass fishing is a tradition that spans generations and creates memories that last a lifetime.
With the regular bass season now underway, licensed anglers can legally keep fish within the state’s daily limit and size restrictions. Be sure to review current DEC regulations before heading out on the water.

Every summer, anglers from across the country travel to Western New York to experience the lake’s legendary smallmouth bass fishery. Arrive at a boat launch early in the morning and you’ll likely see dozens of bass boats preparing for a day on the water.
Lake Erie continues to be recognized as one of the top bass fishing destinations in North America, and it’s right here in our backyard.
Free Fishing Opportunities Available This Summer
If you’ve never been fishing before, this summer offers a great opportunity to get started.
Several free fishing days are still scheduled across New York State, allowing residents to fish without purchasing a fishing license. There are also upcoming Learn to Fish events designed to help beginners and families gain confidence on the water.
One local event is scheduled at Chestnut Ridge Park, giving Erie County residents a chance to learn the basics of fishing while enjoying the outdoors with their kids. Check registration details and sign up early if you’re interested.
Get Ready for a Great Summer on the Water
While recent rain and cooler temperatures have slowed things down a bit, warmer weather is on the way.
As water temperatures rise throughout the summer, bass fishing should only continue to improve. Whether you’re fishing from shore, a kayak, or a bass boat, there’s no better time to enjoy New York’s outstanding fisheries.
