It's never good when you see a local business close their doors.  It hurts even more when it's one of your favorites.

The note was there on the locked door.  It just says "Thank you Elmwood for your years of love and support."  According to WKBW, Fowler's is closing their Elmwood location at 746 Elmwood Avenue in Buffalo.

The good news is that it looks like it's just that one location and that they're hoping to make renovations and improvements to some of the other stores.  They still have locations in Cheektowaga, East Aurora, Hamburg and Tonawanda that are still in normal operation.

They say they're going to focus their energy on other projects in the future:

"After more than a decade of selling sponge candy, confections, and ice cream on Elmwood Avenue we are sad to share the news that we have closed the Elmwood store. We are focusing our energy on our other retail locations including a fall renovation of the factory store in North Buffalo off of Hertel Ave at 100 River Rock Dr. The River Rock location has been the host of our annual factory tour and it has a great space for our updated store. More news on that to come later this summer." - Fowler's Chocolates

Although there has been a long debate over who makes the best sponge candy in Buffalo, it's Fowler's that claims to be the original makers of Buffalo's Best Sponge Candy since 1910 .  I have to admit, there is something special about getting one of those pink boxes filled with their delicious chocolates.

The locations still left in business include:

2563 Union Road
Cheektowaga, NY 14227

671 Main Street
East Aurora, NY 14052

314 Lake Street
Hamburg, NY 14075

2468 Niagara Falls Blvd.
Tonawanda, NY 14150

100 River Rock Drive
Suite 102
Buffalo, NY 14207

And of course, you can still order online for delivery, curbside pickup, or in-store pickup by visiting their website.

They can also do custom gifts for corporate events, bridal parties, wedding gifts, and holidays.  They ask that you give them a call to see if they can help you out.  Call 800-824-2263 for more info.
