New York State Has FREE Air Conditioners For Residents
It is about to get very warm across New York State.
Summer officially arrives this month, and we’re already seeing temperatures climb well into the 80s. Are you ready for it? Have you been waiting for these warm, sunny days? If you’re not prepared for the heat, New York State has some assistance available that could help you stay cool this summer.
Summer Temperatures Are Arriving Early
It’s amazing how quickly the weather can change in New York State. One day, we’re talking about cold, wet conditions, and the next we’re dealing with heat and humidity.

We’re also still feeling the effects of an unusually wet spring. Have you noticed the increase in mosquitoes around your yard? What about ticks? It seems like every day someone is sending us a photo of a tick they found on their child, dog, or cat.
Keeping Cool Could Be a Challenge This Summer
While insects may be one of the nuisances waiting outside this summer, the bigger challenge for many people could be staying cool indoors.
That is especially true if you live in an upper-floor apartment or a home that tends to trap heat during the summer months. To help residents stay safe during periods of extreme heat, New York State is once again offering a program that provides free air conditioners to qualifying households.
Cooling Centers and Community Resources Available
Communities across New York State are also preparing for the hotter weather. Many cities and towns have plans in place to help residents beat the heat.
Depending on where you live, that could include cooling centers, splash pads, public pools, or extended access to air-conditioned public buildings. Schools and community centers may also offer relief during especially hot days.
Enjoying Summer Across New York State
There is no doubt that New York State is a beautiful place to spend the summer.
From Niagara Falls to New York City, there are countless activities and attractions for families to enjoy. Whether you’re planning outdoor adventures, festivals, road trips, or days at the beach, there is something for everyone from June through the start of the school year in September.
See If You Qualify for a Free Air Conditioner
If you’re concerned about staying cool this summer, now is the time to see if you qualify for New York State’s free air conditioner program.
"In 2026, the program is expanding eligibility to offer free air conditioners to more members of the Essential Plan, now covering 16 qualifying conditions. Expanded eligibility will help provide in-home cooling to more people with health conditions that may be exacerbated by heat".
In addition to free cooling units for eligible residents, there may be other incentives available to help reduce the cost of purchasing an energy-efficient air conditioner for your home or apartment.
As temperatures continue to rise, preparing now could make a big difference during what may be a long, hot summer across the Empire State.
But hurry, there is a limited availability of these.
"Funding for this program in the summer of 2026 is limited and applications may close early if we run out of funding".
