New York State Puts an End to These Fishing Licenses
While there are plenty of ways to spend Presidents’ Day weekend with the kids, one event happening across New York State is completely free, and it gets you outside.
Free Fishing Weekend in New York State
New York State has announced the first of several Free Fishing Days of the year. During these designated weekends, anglers can fish without purchasing a fishing license. If you’ve been thinking about trying ice fishing, this is the perfect opportunity to do it at no cost.
A Warm-Up Just in Time for Valentine’s Day Weekend
Valentine’s Day weekend is here, and temperatures in Western New York are finally expected to warm up a bit. After weeks of bitter cold and steady snowfall, many areas will see highs climb into the 40-degree range.
It may not feel like spring just yet, but the slight warm-up will offer a welcome break and perhaps even a hint of the season ahead.
The Outdoors Make New York State Special

Fishing with Kids: Frustrating and Fantastic
When was the last time you went fishing with your family? If you have young kids, you know fishing can be equally frustrating and entertaining. There are tangled lines, misplaced casts, and sometimes even hooks that get a little too close for comfort. But once you move past those minor hiccups, spending time on the ice or along the shoreline with your kids becomes something truly special.
Those are the memories that last.
2026 New York State Free Fishing Dates
New York State has announced multiple opportunities this year to fish without a license. The goal is simple: encourage more people to experience the outdoors.
Here are the 2026 Free Fishing dates:
- February 14–15
- June 27–28
- September 26
- November 11
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation does an excellent job outlining fishing regulations and safety guidelines. Even though a license is not required on these dates, all other rules and regulations still apply.
Ice Fishing Safety Tips
If this is your first time ice fishing, safety should be your top priority. Ice conditions can vary widely, especially during warming trends.
Consider staying close to shore unless you are with someone experienced who understands safe ice thickness and local conditions. Always let someone know where you are going and when you expect to return.
Most importantly, enjoy everything New York State has to offer. Practice conservation, respect the environment, and always leave a place better than you found it.
