There are some guidelines that you will have to meet in order to file for free here in New York State.
The first thing you need to meet is the income guideline. If you make over $73,000 per year, unfortunately in New York you don't qualify to file for free.
If your yearly gross income is lower than $73,000, you meet the guideline to file for free. According to the New York State tax service website, the income guideline is defined by your federal adjusted gross income.
Federal adjusted gross income (AGI) is defined as gross income minus adjustments to income. Gross income includes your wages, dividends, capital gains, business income, retirement distributions, as well as other income.
In order to file for free, you will need to visit the New York State tax service website and then choose an online tax service from their list. Double-check to make sure you meet the criteria for filing for free. Each service has different guidelines.
After choosing an online tax prep service, you follow their steps and if you meet all the New York requirements to file for free, you will not have to pay anything to file your taxes.
Your taxes must be filed and submitted by April, 15th. If you need more time, you can file for an extension.
