There is some good news and some not so good news, for those who ride a snowmobile in New York State.

The winter has been decent for snowmobiling conditions and trails here in New York State. The snow has piled up and the temps were below freezing for much of the season, so far.

Earlier this week, it was announced that New York State was going to have two weekends in which there was no fee to ride a sled. They essentially are waving the registration fee for those who want to get on the sled before the winter ends.

While this is the GOOD news, there is some not so good news.

The forecast for the next few days is calling for rain/snow that will be followed by a significant warm up next week! Most of the forecasts are calling for highs in the mid to upper 60s!

The best advice for those who ride, or want to start riding a snowmobile in New York State is to join a club! The clubs maintain the trails and they maintain the relationships with the landowners.

Unfortunately, some trails have already been forced to close as as result of the poor conditions. As quickly as the snow fell, it has melted in some areas.

The Southern Tier Snow Drifters posted on Facebook that, "We hope all of you enjoyed the weekend of riding. Unfortunately the time has come for us to close our trails with the warm temperatures and rain upon us. Keep your fingers and toes crossed that the trails can survive and we will be able to re-open".
